In a nutshell, anxiety is a physiological reaction to a perceived threat that triggers a series of rippling effects throughout the body. Heart rate goes up. Cortisol levels go up. Sweat glands turn on to moderate body temperature. All blood is pumped to arms and legs. Breathing increases to get more oxygen to muscles in the arms and legs… does this remind you of anything??
The body goes into the prehistoric reactions of fight or flight when it perceives a threatening situation. Back in caveman days when we were confronted with a threat, it was frequently life-threatening. We were conditioned over time to have a fight or flight reaction otherwise we would become lunch. And because these reactions are ingrained in us on a DNA level, we still have this reaction. Only it’s now falsely triggered. Now whenever we “perceive” something threatening, our bodies go into fight or flight, and as technological advances increase the amount of contact we have with the rest of the world, so our stress levels continue to increase exponentially. There are more and more threats to our “existence”. More potential competitors for our jobs or our partners. Higher and higher standards of living that we feel we need to maintain in order to keep our friends and partners happy and liking us. Ever more things we need to have to earn the approval of our bosses or parents. And our kids. AND the Joneses. And before we know it we are a continual ball of stress about to explode at a moment’s notice. And where is logic and reason when we are in fight or flight? You got it! Nowhere to be found. This is because it is believed that when we are in a state of fight or flight, we are operating out of our amygdala which is at the base of our skull and also houses animalistic emotions like fear and anger. Logic and reason are believed to be housed in the frontal lobe, along with happiness, peace and calm. And you cannot operate from two places in your brain at one time.
The good news is that you can control which part of your brain you are operating from, you just have to regain control of yourself, which can be easier said than done.
And I can teach you some tools and techniques that you can use to moderate your stress levels, and interrupt the fight/flight mechanism once it has kicked on in your body, while desensitizing anything in your subconscious that might trigger that reaction.
